The hilarious children's book for adults as well, "Wanda Linda" is the story of a pre-school girl who wakes up grumpy and terrorizes the neighbourhood. Her embarrassed hairy-nosed wombat looks on with mortification.
Not only are the illustrations bright and fascinating, but the words are peppered with brilliant Australianisms bound to cause the fondest amusement.
Excerpt:
"On the way through the park we met Mrs Kafoops.
'Goodness gracious, Wanda-Linda, what's the matter with you?' she asked I made a very rude noise.
'Hell's bells,' said Mrs Kafoops, 'what a beastly crosspatch!'"
Wonderful language all the way through and a story that would appeal to toddlers and young children everywhere.
I have been reading this to my three children for years and it still ranks among the favourites. In fact, they all know it off by heart and take great delight in making the "very rude noise" in the story.
