The Spelling For Life Professional Development Workshops
Sixteen years of tutoring and assessing spelling and I've seen just about every spelling mistake a person can possibly make.
What I've noticed is that spelling errors often boil down to a small but significant set of false assumptions. This gives rise to a certain predictability, and thus a solution.
Spelling For Life is a program designed to stop students making spelling mistakes. It is also put together so that students can use strategies that good spellers use.
The program iteslf is a series of lessons. They are interesting to learn and fun to teach in the classroom or homeschool.
Students go from simple literacy tasks to complex ones with relative ease.
Workshop Contents
During this interactive course teachers will learn a method of introducing many of the rules of Enlgish spelling.
Teachers construct their own spelling reference book, complete with a sequence of spelling rules that can be immediately applied.
This book can then be used:
a. As a model notebook for students to compile.
b. As an invaluable reference for answering sticky spelling questions students might have.
There is also a unique unit on teaching prefixes, base words and suffixes.
Finally, teachers learn a method of putting all these principles together in a "Spelling Formula", which is a multisensory spelling technique that helps students deal with long, seemingly complex words that they may never have had the confidence to tackle before.
The Benefits of Keeping It Simple
To study Spelling For Life, teachers simply need a lined notebook, a pencil and a red pen.
Workshop attendees are sent a PDF of the manual (valued at $39.95) for their reference.
As the mantra of Spelling For Life says, "Keep it Simple."

Become a Host School
Apart from conducting workshops in capital cities, I often visit regional and remote communities on a host school basis.
What happens is a school provides the workspace and catering and helps me attract paying attendees in return for sending its teachers to the PD at no cost.
What I do is advertise locally through the newspapers and send notices of the workshop to people who have bought the Spelling For Life book in the area. I ask that the host school talk with other schools and practitioners who might be interested in coming.
If more than the minimum viability number of people want to attend, I also contribute to catering so that the school doesn’t go too far our of pocket.
All numbers and costs are negotiable and unique to each school.
