The Lindamood Phoneme Sequencing Program

Linguistlearning's Involvement

I had the very good fortune to be trained and mentored in this program by seniorLindamood-Bell Learning Processes staff.

I worked for them for the best part of two years and had thorough training inLiPS with several hundred hours of clinical experience in the program.

I was also trained to train others in the program.

Sadly, when the company left Australia, it left only a few people in Australia with the know-how to train others.

In A Nutshell

Written by linguists, this program puts the classification of speech sounds intolayman's terms.

To fully understand the power of this method, it is good to knowthat human speech sounds are classified according to three sets of data:

  • voice (whether the vocal cords are vibrating or not)
  • placing (what part of the mouth is being used to produce the sound)
  • manner (how the sound is being made, e.g. a tap, a trill etc.)
The LiPS Program helps students become aware of these three components of speech and so become phonemically aware.

Positives:
  • extremely thorough;
  • all students make gains, and most students make significant gains if brought through the program completely;
  • backed up by scientific data which shows actual change in brain structure after stimulation with the program;
  • comprehensive, takes students from simple tasks through to complex ones in a logical format
  • enjoyable and stimulating for students
Downsides

  • Like any program with such scope, it takes a lot of practice to become skilled;
  • Professional Development seminars by Lindamood-Bell are only offered in the United States
