Alison Lester is renowned for her detailed illustrations in wonderfully imaginative children's books. "The Journey Home" is a fine example of her craft.

Brother and sister "Wild" and "Wooly" dig such a deep hole in their sandpit that they fall through to the North Pole (yup, it's set in the Southern Hemisphere!).

To get back home they visit six classic characters, including Santa and the Fairy Queen, and stay the night at each house, dining on a sumptuous meal and sleeping in new and wonderful beds every time.

Rich language interwoven with familiar characters makes this a most compelling children's book. Love it!
